A good idea and a well-developed business plan are important for business. Our school students met Iva Mihalic Krčmar, a young woman who transformed her hobby and love for traveling into a successful job. The young entrepreneur talked with the students and in the conversation, presented the development of the Putoholičari portal, business opportunities and engagements, successes and obstacles on the road to success.
After a motivating encounter, the students started developing their business idea and developing the plan. The students formed teams, distributed tasks, held a series of meetings and brain storms, made decisions, developed their own business plans and started producing a herbal tea, develop a computer games, a burglar alarm system and an anti-fire system, making recycled paper, canvas bags, decorative items and gifts.
On 4th April 2019, the YEA students presented a business idea to the community during a conference promoted by the Business Association of Baião.
In a session where about 200 people were present, one student represented the project among the speakers.
The YEA project was presented to the community as well as a business idea related to the catering course in operation at our school. The authorities present were very pleased with the project.
Since December 2017 our students have been keeping a record of their savings. How much they are going to save depends on their expenses. Each student knows in what way they can cut their expenses and has made a plan. By the end of a year we will see how much they managed to save. In this task they used different ICT tools to record all their expenses and savings. By the end of this school year they will share with their class how much did they saved. On parent meeting teacher talked with parents about it and ask parents to support this activity in every way because we have to save money and teach our children about savings. Students learned a lot about cash flow, savings and the important facts how to be a smart consumer. Students shared with class how they search for better prices, lower prices but quality products, declarations, avoiding marketing tricks (music in stores, sales that are not actually sales and lots of other facts they have to have in mind while spending their money.) Aslo students learned about making the right decisions while spending money, when do we need to buy something and when we can avoid unnecessary spending and wasting money. Students register under Primary School Vezica to use virtual bank for kids. In Bankaroo application they could track their expenses and think about savings. In the digital age children are used to using some digital tools, so this was something they could have on their mobile devices. Recording their expenses and tracking where the cash goes students had a good sense of the spending and saving money in general.
Our schools tries to develop financial literacy from the youngest age as an improtant part of Maths and Administrative lessons. We have financial literacy workshops, project days, every year we take part in Global money week. We invite people who prepare our town budget, we talk about our school budget with students. With our sixgraders and eightgraders we tried to use a new online tool – Bakaroo. It is a free online tool - a virtual bank for children and young people that teaches them about the value of money, personal income, earning and spending, keeping saving journals and the flow of pocket. Our children ran their savings diary with Bankaroo. A very interestin fact is, that the creator of Bankaroo – the one who came up with this idea – was an 11 year old boy.
Our school was registered on Bankroo; virtual bank for kids. The administrator teacher added 33 students who take place on Erasmus Project on the system. 20 $ was defined weekly for each student. And some special goal as machining movie etc. defined for them to earn money additional. It aim to show to students how to manage their own money on the digital system.
Last November, we started our activities of Erasmus + “ Young Entrepreneurs in Action” project. Our first action was about Bankaroo. Two teachers from a high school explained us the main concepts of this topic in two lessons. During the following months all we students who were going to leave for the Czech Republic started our activity: we had to save our money to use during this week. We had the possibility to understand the real value of this virtual bank that helps us to manage money in a smart way. Besides this app, also, makes us earn more, virtually, through the interest charged. Well, we liked earning money through play.
Who is saving and what? Are we saving? How important it is to save? What can we save? These and similar questions were answered and discussed by the 1st Primary School Čakovec pupils in order to explore the importance and advantages of saving, the importance of rational spending of all goods we have at our disposal (energy, school supplies, clothes, toys, ...), they also developed the skills of reusing old things, recycling and reducing our spending, they developed the habits of keeping and saving as one of the crucial habits of financially literate citizens.
Financial literacy is developed and acquired from the youngest age. The development of financial literacy is extremely important in the developed countries which developed a series of educational materials, examples of good practice etc. Bakaroo is a free online tool often called the virtual bank for children which was developed in 2011 by a company BrightAct LLC, and today it has over 120,000 members from more than a hundred countries. Our pupils are part of this big international community of young people who in an online environment learn about life’s priorities, setting goals, keep track of personal income and spending, keep their saving journals and observe the flow of their pocket money in order to better learn how to handle their money and reach the set goals they have. Pupils learned to run a savings diary by using the Bankaroo program. Also, pupils designed and created pocket savings diaries in their art class.
As we came up with lots of business ideas and plans and we tried to put into practise some of them we had to solve how and where to give publicity to our products. The easiest for us was making posters and display them to all visible places at our school – noticeboards, main entrance doors. We also talked about our products with other pupils of our school, with parents. When we started running our sports hall canteen, we informed all school, that usually bring their pupils to our tournament, that they do not have to prepare snacks at home – the can buy and taste our delicious toasts, cookies and drinks. Teachers were happy to buy our coffee with a piece of handmade gingerbread. Our canteen is getting more and more popular. At the last weekend of this school year we are preparing a big international tournament so we will get new customers.
Our students had to think of some business ideas – innovations, like earrings with sound, backpacks with integrated umbrellas and so on. In this activity they had to present their new business ideas. Students were divided in teams. Each student had a different role within the team. Before the activity we did some research about team roles. We found out that there are 9 team roles. It doesn’t mean that every team has to have 9 students. The important thing is that every team role has its strengths and weaknesses and to take that into consideration is a great opportunity for self-perception and understanding each other while working in a team. The nine team roles are: coordinator, motivator, finisher, shaper, specialist, monitor – evaluator, resource investigator, plant and implementer. This helped students assign roles within the teams.
While working on the assignment they got to know each other much better. Except from the team roles they had to decide about the design of the presentation, to think of presentation and communication skills and, of course, different marketing tricks because they had to prepare presentations of new business ideas and win the best score. Students followed other students’ presentations, asked questions and made decisions about investing their imaginary money in the innovation. In this assignment students also had to calculate how much money they need for their startup. They also made visit cards with QR codes to give them to their imaginary potential investors.
Through billboards it is possible to give the right information and to get as many people to save money by making the most of energy and more. The realization of this billboard has allowed us and the whole school to understand that it is possible to re- enter through small tricks like: eco benzina; food recycling; energy saving with wind energy; electrical storage with solar panels; students have tried recycling and reuse in order to earn and save. There have been many class discussions and moments of sharing with other groups of students. The main objective was: How to responsable spend!
We are surrounded by advertisements in newspapers, on jumbo posters, social networks, TVs, web pages, … Some of ads we like more and some are less. Why? How? What is most important with adds?
We have developed a business idea and developed a dedicated plan, we produced our own product, it is came a moment to offer our products to the school market.

These and many other questions were asked by students with their teacher Helena to sell as many products as possible and earn as much as possible at the school market. The students created mental maps and posters that helped them achieve the goal.
On October 30, an action on financial training was promoted at the school. This initiative was addressed to the students of the project Young Entrepreneurs in Action and consisted of the representation of a play related to the theme. The play "Contas mal contadas" aimed to pass a positive and didactic message about the importance of knowledge of matters related to the financial area, but above all, to adopt an appropriate and responsible financial behavior. This action also had the contribution of speeches by elements from the Portugal National Bank elements, the real state value market commission and the municipality.
We started a brief discussion on the importance of work, the role of money and consumer rights. The students have concluded that work and money are very closely linked, because if you work more -you make more money. But that does not mean that you will have more money, because someone wants to spend more and someone wants to save. They consider that its important to save because you can afford some things that are more expensive or that money can provide you something that you really need or improves quality of life at some point in time. With the learned experience, some students reported that they bought a product that wasn’t right before the seller had guaranteed the guarantee sheet and that they had replaced the product in the store.
On 7th March 2018, a businessman from Cerignola, Francesco Montingelli, came to our school. He is a man who loves his job. Mister Montingelli talked students about the importance of education that goes beyond our future choices. He asked them what their future hopes are and how they can make them come true. Later, he told his story; he said that when he was younger he went to Rome in order to study and he began to act in the theatre ; when he realized that his passion could become a real job he began to develop some projects that could be supported
at national and European level. His early successes encouraged him and he succeeded in founding a private party planning and entertainment agency . Now, he is glad because he is giving young people the possibility to work in different resorts in the Gargano area during the summer and he, usually, organizes every type of concert and meeting. Besides, he talked about the bureaucracy of his business and he explained the importance of making good decisions. Thanks to this interesting meeting, students had the possibility to confront this young
businessman and to understand their personal dreams and future hopes. They were very pleased and when Mister Montingelli asked students what the most important aspects defining a good businessman are, they answered that passion, creativity and expertise represent the right elements for a good result! When I grasped a sense of happiness in their eyes I felt a deep satisfaction in myself as a teacher!
